Expolingua Berlin: Another Successful Event Comes to a Close

Berlin. Expolingua Berlin, Germany’s only international fair for languages and cultures, came to a conclusion on Sunday, November 16th, completing another year of accomplishment. With 33 countries represented, this year witnessed yet another new record; the number of exhibitors totalled 191. 14,858 visitors arrived at Berlin’s Russian House of Science and Culture seeking information on around sixty languages and indicate that they were extremely satisfied with what they found.

The exhibitors at Expolingua Berlin included both German and foreign-based language schools, language-travel organisers, student-exchange organisations, embassies, cultural institutes, tourist centres and publishers. Among this year’s newcomers were the Embassies of Colombia and Indonesia, who introduced their countries’ educational institutions as well as language and higher education programmes.

The hundred events in the seminar programme met with great approval. They attracted 3,767 attendees, who listened and interacted with experts delivering information on language journeys, language instruction, work-and-travel programmes, as well as on language tests and descriptions of careers in the foreign language field. Large crowds were also drawn to the numerous mini-language courses, where participants were able to get a glimpse of Arabic, Finnish, French, Japanese and other tongues. The possibilities the new media present for language instruction were also introduced, among the highlights being a live video link-up to the Philippines.

This year’s guest language, French, was represented in a special section of the exhibition and it also played a major role in the seminar and culture programme. In addition to presentations on the language and cultures of the francophone countries, the programme also comprised a French-language film and a reading.

The next Expolingua Berlin will take place in the Russian House of Science and Culture in the heart of Berlin from November 20 – 22, 2009.
