Expolingua Berlin 2009 comes to a successful conclusion

Berlin. Expolingua Berlin, the international fair for languages and cultures, came to a successful conclusion on Sunday the 22nd November. This year, 204 exhibitors from 31 countries were represented at the languages fair. Over the three days, 12,321 visitors gained information on around 50 languages in the Russisches Haus der Wissenschaft und Kultur in Berlin.

“Interpreting and Translating” was the focus of this year’s fair. In a special section, different exhibitors, including the European Commission’s General Directorate for Interpretation, the European Court of Justice, the European Parliament, as well as the Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (BDÜ), presented training possibilities and future prospects for interpreters and translators. At the joint EU stand, those interested were able to try their hand at simultaneous interpretation in the interpreting booth. This is a career with a future: The aim of the campaign “Interpreting for Europe… into German”, that was launched at Expolingua, is to draw attention to the career possibilities with the EU institutions.

In addition, amongst the exhibitors at Expolingua Berlin, German and foreign-based language schools, language-travel operators, tourist boards, exchange organisations, embassies, cultural institutes, tourist boards and publishing houses were represented. For the first time, the European headquarters of the Confucius Institute (HANBAN), as well as the Chinese Cultural Centre Berlin presented the Chinese language and culture.

The over 100 presentations of the seminar programme that ran parallel to the fair proved to be particularly popular. Experts gave information about language travel, language instruction, work-and-travel programmes, as well as language tests and job portraits in the field of languages. Large crowds were drawn to the many mini language courses, at which visitors could try out Arabic, Finnish, Korean, Spanish and further languages.

The next Expolingua Berlin will take place from 19 – 21 November, 2010 once again in the Russisches Haus der Wissenschaft und Kultur in Berlin.
